Kik Messenger is the perfect social chat app with millions of users making it their primary texting tool every day. The app has gathered such a devoted fan base that a large number of “modded” versions are shared among friends and all over the Internet. Maybe you’ve heard of some of them, like GhostKik, Pikik, Pikik2, Pikek, and Nullkik. How do these “Kik mods” work? Are they safe? How do you find and use them? Read on for all you need to know about Kik APK Download & Mod files.
You’ve heard the term “modded Kik” or “Kik mod” and might wonder what it means. To “mod” an app is short for modifying it. A change is made to the app that the maker of the modded version, and others who have installed it, find pleasant or useful as an enhancement to the authorized version of the app.
When you go looking for a Kik mod, your search keywords should be “APK” and the name of the mod, as in “pikik APK” or “kik mod APK.” This is because the file you are looking for is an Android installation package, which uses the extension “.apk” the way a Windows PC installation package uses the “.exe” file extension.
To install a modded Kik, you have to download and install its APK file. APK files only work in the Android environment, so you can only install these modified Kik Messenger apps on an Android phone or with an Android emulator on your home computer or online.
How Do Kik Mods Work?
Modified Kik Messenger apps, also known as Kik mods or modded Kiks, are stand-alone versions of the Kik Messenger app that have been changed in some way. When you install a modded Kik, you are not changing your authorized version of Kik Messenger. You are installing a new social chat app that basically works just like Kik Messenger, uses the Kik Messenger network, and lets you talk with your friends on Kik Messenger but it is not Kik Messenger. When you open a modded Kik the first time, you will be asked to enter your username and password or to register for a new account, just as you were the first time you opened the real Kik Messenger.
Because each .apk for a modded kik is a separate and fully functional app, you can have several modded Kiks on your smartphone at the same time along with your real Kik Messenger app. Do be aware that each time you log in on one Kik Messenger; you sign out of the other and lose all message history.
This means, if I have been using the authorized version of Kik Messenger as my primary chat app (as many people do) and I have a long chat with a friend from last week saved on there, when I sign in on the Evilkik mod, all those messages disappear. They do not remain on my ‘real’ Kik Messenger and they do not appear on my Kik mod. The same thing happens if I switch from the Mint version of Evilkik to Pikachu.
What Do Kik Mods Do?
Modded versions of Kik Messenger most often change the background image, fonts, and other details of the user interface that is only seen in the device applying the modded Kik. For example, Matrik brings the familiar green background from the Matrix movies to your Kik Messenger. It’s perfectly understandable that people are happy to find a way to make their Kik Messenger GUI have the kind of background and colors they like best since they’re on it so much of the time keeping in touch with friends.
Most mods of Kik Messenger are also designed to interfere with your friends’ receiving read receipts on the messages they send you. A properly functioning read receipt starts as soon as you press to send your message over the Kik network with an “S” indicating, appropriately, that the message has been sent from your device and is on the way to the Kik servers. It almost always changes immediately to a lighter-shaded “D” indicating that the message has reached the Kik servers, left there, and is on its way to your friend’s device. When the “D” is a solid black, it means your message is sitting on your friend’s device. Once your friend reads the message, the read receipt on your end changes to “R” and stays there as long as the message remains in your chat stream.
People who use modded Kiks often take advantage of a feature that allows them to turn off the read receipt so that it never turns to “R” status. That means that (depending on the mod) people sending kiks their way can see that it was sent or that it safely made it to the device but cannot ever tell if it was read. You don’t have to turn off read notifications when using a modded version of Kik Messenger, but it seems a lot of people like that feature.
Other features popular on Kik mods include a “fake camera,” an option that opens up all the emoji in the Kik Smiley Shop, and a way to disable the option for your friends to forward any message you send with video or picture content.
About Fake Cameras
The “fake camera” deserves an extra word of caution to people on the receiving end of pics in Kik Messenger. The ability to take an instant photo or video clip while in a message stream is often used as quick reassurance between new Kik friends that we are who we claim to be. The “fake camera” in a Kik mod (or a stand-alone “fake camera” app) makes an image from a user’s gallery look like it was just taken. If we want to be sure an instant pic or video clip was just taken, we need to ask each other to do something in the image that proves it was just taken. A date on a sign may not be enough as some people are quite clever and skilled in Photoshop and similar apps. Maybe something like, “write my username on a piece of paper and hold it up with one hand while pinching your nose with the other and sticking out your tongue.” Or, instead of the day, ask them to write a couple of disconnected words like, “elephant boots ala mode.” I know it sounds odd, but you want to be sure
Are Kik Mods Safe?
Making and using a modified version of Kik Messenger is totally legit. It’s just people taking a free app, making changes to it, and sharing it with their friends. It uses the same network as authorized versions of Kik Messenger are using. The difference comes in features, support, and updates.
One of the best features of Kik Messenger is how it protects your privacy and your device. A modded Kik is not necessarily open to hackers, but the authorized version of Kik definitely is not. If you decide to use a modified Kik, be sure to have a reputable virus protection installed on your device with all updates installed. Also, be very careful where you get your .apk files for any modded app.
It is also very important to be sure to restore your security settings after installing it. To get a modified version of an app installed on your Android device, you have to change your security settings to allow installation of files from “unknown sources.” When using a mod on your home computer or online, you may have to temporarily disable your firewall. This is because a modded app is not coming from a developer or company that your service provider or device manufacturer has ever heard of before. You want to be sure to go back restore your security settings as soon as you are finished downloading and installing your modded version of Kik Messenger.
How to Find and Install APK Files
“As Android, iPhone and other mobile platforms grow, we are moving away from the page-based Internet. The new Internet is app centric and often message-centric.”- Keith Teare
Last but not least, the most hazardous part of downloading a modded .apk file for Kik Messenger may be downloading the file in the first place. Then, when you want the mod on your smartphone, you need a way to get it there.
For the latter part of that, Dropbox provides an efficient way to save, retrieve, and share files. It makes getting files from your home computer to your smartphone easy. Simply download the Dropbox app from your favorite app store. Once it downloads and installs on your device, the app will guide you to set up a new account and then on how to link your mobile app to an app on your PC. Once you have Dropbox set up on both your smartphone and home computer, use your PC to get the Kik mod apps you want to try.
Dropbox does not scan files for viruses or malware, so it’s still your responsibility to find a source you can trust. One source that provides Dropbox links to several Kik mods is a user post found at NetGenUpdate. It appears to be safe. I downloaded several modded Kiks using it but that is just an experience share, not a recommendation. You have to do the research for yourself, for you know your situation best.
If you choose to trust that resource, it’s simple to get your files onto your app. While hovering over the url for the Kik mod you want, right-click to open the link in a new tab. On the new tab, choose “Save to my Dropbox.” The file will download onto your computer, perfectly synced on your mobile app.
You can now open the Kik mod of your choice on your computer with your on board or online emulator. When you want to install the mod on your smartphone, open the Dropbox app there and select the .apk file for the Kik mod you want. Installation will begin, and soon you will have your modded Kik up and running.
Modded versions of Kik Messenger are increasingly popular with fans of the original app. The most popular features are all the choices out there of different colors and themes for the background, keyboard, and fonts. Finding, downloading, and installing an APK file is easy with the help of Dropbox, but it is always up to us to make sure the source where we get our files is safe and reliable, free of viruses, malware, and any vulnerability that hackers might abuse.
