Why Do I Get An Email From Kik Messenger When I Create A New Account?
We do realize that, for most people, protecting their privacy on the Internet is, rightly, a huge priority. So, it is also understandable when we hear that some people are a little bit reluctant to share their contact details on social media and/or instant messaging apps or sites.
In fact, one of the great things about the Kik Messenger app when it comes to privacy is that they do not (and will not) share their users’ contact details with other users or other third party companies. Unlike WhatsApp, for example, Kik Messenger does not require you to share your telephone number with anybody in order to be able to chat to them online. All you ever need to share would be your user name or your Kik code.
But even when all of that is true, some people still get a little bit reluctant about adding their email address when registering on Kik Messenger. People like that may just wonder why Kik Messenger needs their email address if they claim they will not share it with anybody else.
There are several simple reasons why they still ask you for your email address. The first and foremost reason, such people would like to hear, is precisely to do with protecting the privacy of their users.
Registering your email address allows the Kik Messenger app to verify your identity when you are both trying to create a new account or trying to deactivate it. The benefits of this to you are two fold. On the one hand, it guarantees that only you (or someone with access to both your email and Kik Messenger account. And that should only be you, for your security) would be ever able to activate or deactivate your Kik Messenger profile. And, on the other hand, it also guarantees that only real people create profiles on Kik Messenger. One of the biggest problem that instant messaging sites like Kik Messenger or WeChat or social media sites such as Facebook face these days is the presence of spam bots. These are robots designed to appear human online would attempt to connect with real users in order to obtain personal information about them. With the help of verification tools such as the email verification process involved in activating or deactivating Kik Messenger accounts, the proliferation of spam bots on Kik Messenger can be tackled more effectively.
There is another reason why signing up to Kik Messenger requires you to provide an email address. This has to do with the optional “Address Book Matching” feature that is available to all Kik Messenger users. Anybody who selects to turn on the “Address Book Matching” feature on the Kik Messenger could be added to their email contacts who also use Kik Messenger and who also have “Address Book Matching” turned on. The important thing to know about this is that it only works if you have this feature turned on and even them your email address is not shown publicly. You would just be added to your existing friends’ chat lists and, in turn, your friends will be added to yours. That is all.
Finally, if Kik Messenger ever needs to contact you directly and securely, it would only use the email address that you registered when you originally created your profile.
It is, therefore, really important that you enter a valid email address that you (and only you) have access to. If your email address ever changes you would need to update it on Kik (we will show you how to do this later on in this article).
Why Do I Get An Email From Kik Messenger When I Deactivate A New Account?
The answer to this question is really similar to the answer we gave you in the previous section. When you try to deactivate your account, Kik Messenger would send you an email in order to verify your identity. If it did not, anyone who, for what whatever reason, has access to your account, would be able to deactivate your account even without your knowledge. So the basic reason for this is, once again, your own safety and protection.
There is something else that is really important to bear in mind. And that is that the email address Kik Messenger will send you the deactivation link and instructions to would be the same one that you originally entered when you first created your profile, unless you have updated it since. And here lies the problem. Most Kik Messenger users do not bother to change or update their email address after they create their profiles.
You will need to ensure that you get your Kik email up to date at all times. Also, it is really important that you be the only person with access to both your Kik Messenger account and your email address. Make sure that you use different passwords for each of those services (and anything else that requires you o create a password).
“Email, instant messaging, and cell phones give us fabulous communication ability, but because we live and work in our own little worlds, that communication is totally disorganized.”- Marilyn vos Savant
How To Check That You Have Verified Your Email Address With Kik Messenger?
There are really some very simple steps to follow but they are slightly different based on the kind of device you are using.
If you use an Android, Symbian, or BlackBerry smart mobile device, these are the steps that you will need to follow:
- Launch the Kik Messenger app.
- Go into your “settings”.
- Select “your account” and read your email status.
If you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch, these are the steps that you will need to follow:
- Launch the Kik Messenger app.
- Go into your “settings”.
- Select “your account”.
- Finally, tap on “email”. This action will cause your email status to display on your screen.
If you have a Windows Phone, then these are the steps that you will need to follow:
- Launch the Kik Messenger app.
- Go into your “settings”.
- Select “your account” and read your email status.
Basically, your email address status would either be “confirmed / verified” or “unconfirmed / unverified”. If the email address displaying has a “confirmed / verified” status and is correct (i.e., the email address is still the same one that you have access to and would like to continue using) there would be nothing you need to do. If, however, the email address no longer correct, you should be able to replace it with the new one there and then.
These are the steps you will need to take in order to do that:
- Launch the Kik Messenger app.
- Go into your “settings”.
- Select “your account”.
- Tap on “email”. If you have an Android, iPhone, iPod Touch, BlackBerry, then type in the new email address and tap on either “change email” or “save / OK”. If you have a Windows Phone, go on to the next step.
- Tap on “change your email”.
- Type in your new email address.
- Tap the check mark icon.
Once you have changed your email address you will receive an email from Kik Messenger to confirm this.
