Remember when we were kids and we pretended to be warriors, royalty, or celebrities? Sometimes we would dress up for the part, but most of the time all we needed was our imagination. It was a way to practice our creativity, expand our horizons, stretch our talents, and release our dreams into our reality.
Now that we’ve grown, most of us never spend any time in the Neighborhood of Make-Believe. Well, thanks to the Internet and Amazing platform, it’s doesn’t have to be that way. Adults can enjoy roleplay as much as the kid in them once did. If you haven’t tried it yet, let these Kik roleplay ideas get you thinking about it.
What Is Roleplay?
Roleplay is exactly what it sounds like it would be: you play a role. It is nothing unusual, though it may feel a little unusual at first. When an actor takes the stage to portray a character, he is roleplaying. People new to acting, and some with plenty of experience, always feel a little nervous when playing a new role, just like you probably will on your first roleplaying adventure.
The main difference between an actor playing a role and roleplaying on Kik Messenger (other than the pay scale) is that the actor has a script. He knows what to say and do next. In chat roleplay, you never do. You are taking on a character, maybe creating the character from scratch, and weaving a story along with your roleplay partner(s). That means knowing your character, or role, at least well enough to first become that person and then develop the character and story within the roleplay scenario.
Roleplay with Kik Messenger
Kik Messenger lends itself well to roleplay. Its privacy features let you chat with new friends without sharing any personal information. You can even temporarily change your display name to the role you’re playing. Kik group chat rooms are perfect for online roleplaying with several people at a time, making the story bigger. Here are some of the ways Kik Messenger can help you get started with chat roleplay.
Kik Costume Party
If you’ve never tried online roleplay before, look to the friends in your Kik Messenger contact list. Start a group chat and throw a Kik Costume Party. Instead of wearing a costume, you’ll wear a character’s moniker and become that character at the party.
Choose a theme that you know a lot of your friends will like – Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Divergent – being sure it has plenty of characters so people don’t run out of choices.
Instead of donning a costume and mask, guests will change their user names to the name of the character they are playing before entering the party. If they really want to get into the role, they can also change their profile picture to that of the character for the duration of the party.
A couple of rules could be:
- If you come in with a character’s name and someone already in the party is using it, you have to exit and choose another character before returning.
- Everyone has to stay in character all the time during the party; if they slip, they leave (and someone else can grab their role).
It can be fun. Just be ready, as host, to guide the story if it seems to get slow or goes off in a totally wrong direction. For example, if everyone in a TWD party is talking about the recipe for Carol’s cookies, you might want to chime in with, “Oh no! We have walkers on the front lawn!”
If you think having a big group will be too hard and confusing at first, try it with half a dozen friends that you know will really get into the roleplay you suggest. You can always expand it the next time.
Get good at your character and developing your story and, if you really like it, look for roleplay with others in that theme. At the very least, you will get used to the concept of being someone else in a roleplay story that you develop with other people.
Roleplay Chat Bot
I told you Kik Messenger is a natural for roleplay. Well, it is so easy and natural to roleplay on Kik Messenger that Kik has a personality in the Bot Shop designed especially for it. The bot’s full title is, “Roleplay Chat Meet Anime + More,” but it’s known as simply, “Geeking,” too. You can find it in the Bot Shop (tap on the magnifying glass) or scan the Kik code here.
The first thing Geeking will want to know is the kind or level of roleplay you’re interested in.
- Free Form is loose with language and device. Roleplay moves fast, usually with short posts. People aren’t as picky about grammar and spelling. If you are new to roleplay, you might want to start here.
- Semi-Literate roleplay requires more character development. Writing is expected to be at a higher level, with full sentences, maybe even a paragraph at a time.
- Advanced or Highly-Literate roleplay requires much character development, an understanding of the character and the environment, and detailed writing. You will create the story within the roleplay with much thought and with knowledge of your own character as well as the other(s).
Once you have chosen the level of roleplay you want to engage, you will choose a topic. There are 18 altogether, including Anime, Creepypasta, Doctor Who, Family, High School, Romance, and TV/Movies.
Finding a Partner
Now that you have your level and topic all picked out, you are ready to be matched for roleplay. You can browse profiles of Kik members looking for the same level of roleplay in the same topic as you are, or you can let Kik match you with someone.
When you choose to be matched, you will be asked to enter a few words for your profile. You can set up your profile in advance, but if you haven’t done that, the bot will ask you to do it before you are matched with someone.
Now keep in mind, this isn’t your regular profile. You don’t want to type in, “I’m a 24 y/o accountant with a boyfriend and 2 ferrets.” You temporary roleplay profile should reflect the role you will play. For example:
- Let’s say you chose High School Life as your topic. Your profile might be, “Hi, I’m Tiffi, a freshman who loves ponies. I’m a cheerleader and member of the homecoming court, and hope a senior asks me to the prom.”
- If you chose TV/Movies and want to roleplay some Walking Dead, your roleplay profile might read, “Wanting to create some TWD scenes. I’m Carol, and I just invited you in for some cookies. Who are you?”
Both of these profiles set up a suggested scenario for the roleplay. You may be matched with someone who likes it, or you might get turned down because the person matched to you wants to do General Hospital, not The Walking Dead. Don’t take it personally. They don’t know you. It’s the type of roleplay in your profile that doesn’t appeal to them. Just try again.
Other Ways to Roleplay on Kik
If you go to the web to find partners for roleplay on Kik Messenger, be sure to stop at the Roleplaykik page at Reddit. The posts here are fresh, as in 1 or 3 minutes ago. There are posts that sound good and welcoming for beginners, like “Just wanna chat/roleplay with a girl,” others looking for “wolf and vampire rp” and another wanting to roleplay some fan fiction based on a movie entitled, “Wolf Children.”
Kik Friend Finders
From the sidebar on the Roleplaykik page at Reddit you can link to KikSearch. This is a Kik Friend Finder site. You can enter roleplay into the search box and come up with a fair selection of fellow Kik members looking for a partner.
Online Safety
“We are all now connected by the Internet, like neurons in a giant brain.”- Stephen Hawking
Roleplay with Kik Messenger is meant to be a fantasy. Even if you and a partner plan to roleplay again in the future, there is no solid reason for either of you to know the other’s real name, phone number, location, or even an email address, so don’t ask for that information or share it. Always be safe online.
Still, to be really sure to keep your roleplaying separate from the rest of your Kik Messenger life, you might want to register a second account for it. Not only does it keep strangers from getting your real user name, but it also lets you change your display name to your roleplay character without all your friends wondering who you are and where you’ve gone.
You’re allowed to have more than one user account on Kik Messenger but you can only be logged in with one account at a time on one device. That being the case, you want to make sure that you’ve finished all current chatting on your ‘real’ user name before going into the new user name. When you come back to your ‘real’ user name all your contacts will still be there, but any chat sessions that were stored will be gone.
Here’s how to get your Kik Messenger reset so you can create/use a second account:
- Choose Settings.
- Tap on Your Account.
- Choose Reset Kik Messenger.
- Your Kik Messenger app is now ready for you to register or log into a different account for your roleplay fun.
- When you’re ready to go back to your ‘real’ user name, just reset the account again and login with those credentials.
Roleplay can add a lot to our lives. It is a great way to relieve the stress of the day, getting lost in an adventure and letting our creative juices flow. I hope these Kik Roleplay Ideas help you decide if it’s something you want to try and, if so, help you get started. Let me know in the comments below, and thanks for reading!
