Do you love getting your kiks? Can’t go all day without them? Yet, are you spending a good part of every day in a building that puts tight restrictions on its Wi-Fi connections, probably not allowing any form of social media, including Kik Messenger? It’s a challenge a lot of us face every day. Some of the most restrictive Wi-Fi connections are in schools. The administration does this for good reasons, but sometimes it seems they go a little too far with it. What will it hurt to check Kik Messenger during a lunch break? You can, when you know how to login to Kik at School
In case you haven’t heard, Kik Messenger is the awesome social messaging app that more than 275 million users in 230 countries rely on for their text messaging. With Kik, there is no fee for the app and no charge for messaging. You cannot go over the limit with Kik because there are no limits. It is totally free to send text, pics, and videos to friends all over the world as many times as you want.
Kik Messenger is rich in features. When you first open the app and set up your account, Kik provides an address book matching tool to help you find friends already kikking out texts, pics, videos, and more to one another. Friends can chat and share one-on-one or in Kik group chats with up to 50 of you joining in on the fun. Search for group chats on social media like Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to find new friends with similar interests. Emphasize a point in your message with emoji from the Kik Smiley Store, GIFs from Kik’s GIF gallery, or make a meme right in Kik that you can share in a kik and then save to share everywhere. Bored on a Friday night? Start or join a #kikparty.
Don’t miss out any longer. Go to the Google Play or App stores on your smartphone or tablet and get the app. Not using a smartphone or tablet but still want to connect with your friends on Kik Messenger? You can log in on your PC or Mac by setting up an account online. And, with Kik, setting up a new username and account is fast and easy. No time-consuming e-mail verifications or secret questions. No divulging of personal information. Just provide an active e-mail (to retrieve account information if you forget it one day), a first and last name, and then pick your username. When someone new gets your username, maybe through a group chat for cat video fans, they will only see your name and username. Your e-mail address and other information are secure.
Why You Can’t Check Kik Messenger at School
Your school has a job to do. That job is to educate you and your classmates. To do the job well, your school has to minimize distractions. You may have noticed that your principal does not pipe loud music through the intercom or have clowns doing tricks for your amusement in the hallways between classes.
The Internet is full of good things, like Kik Messenger, but it is also crammed full of things that distract. For example, some people would watch cat videos all day if they could. To prevent that sort of off-track activity, your school probably has a pretty tall firewall in place on its Wi-Fi servers.
What Is a Firewall?
Long ago in the days before we had the World Wide Web, everyone knew that a firewall is a physical fireproof wall constructed between two connected apartments or other defined areas of a building. If a fire totally engulfs Apartment A, the firewall prevents it from spreading to Apartment B. In order for it to do that, a firewall has to be well-built and it has to be tall, reaching all the way up the separator between the two units. If it is not built according to code or stops a couple feet short of the top, a fire can still spread to the next unit.
Today, the term firewall is most often related to computing, where it serves a similar function. Here, the fire is the Internet, and they do not want it to get through to anyone inside the building. At least they do not want it all to get through. And, just like a firewall constructed of brick and mortar, how well a Wi-Fi’s firewall is built and how high it goes will determine what you have to do to get your kiks on your lunch break.
A Wi-Fi firewall can be set up to prevent Internet connections to sites lacking certain ratings, or it can be set up to block everything but the sites chosen to be on the school’s whitelist.
Know Your School’s Rules
Keep in mind that using your smartphone or tablet’s data plan, or a VPN, to break through the firewall at your school for any reason, even something as innocent as checking to see what’s up on your Kik Messenger app, is almost always a violation of school rules. If you are found out, there may be consequences you have to face. You will have to review your school’s policies including any disciplinary actions that might come down on you for violating the firewall. Only you (and your parents) can know your situation well enough to determine whether or not it is something you should do.
How to Check Kik Messenger at School
You have a little time that’s all your own, or it seems that it should be. Maybe you’re early for class, on your lunch break, or waiting for someone to pick you up after is out of session and they’re running a little late. You won’t be violating the spirit and intention of the school’s Wi-Fi limits because you are not expected to be studying right now. You think it’s quite justified for you to break through that firewall to check your Kik Messenger. How can you do it?
Use Your Data Plan
The simplest way to check Kik Messenger from school is to temporarily disconnect from your school’s Wi-Fi and connect to your phone’s data plan.
On an Apple iOS device:
- Go to Control Center (swipe up from the bottom of your screen).
- Tap the Wi-Fi icon. It should go gray.
- You are now connected to your data plan for Internet access.
On an Android device:
- Go to your setting panel by tapping the tools icon at the bottom of your screen.
- Find the Wi-Fi setting.
- Tap the on/off selector so that it changes to off.
- You are now using your data plan to connect to the Internet.
Be sure to turn your phone’s Wi-Fi connection back on after checking Kik Messenger. Otherwise, everything you do online will draw on your phone’s data plan allowance.
Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN) app
VPN- stands for virtual private network that connects to an internal network
Another viable option, and the one a lot of people turn to first, is a VPN. Adding a VPN app to your smartphone or tablet will often prevent the school’s firewall from detecting and blocking your device from reaching the Kik Messenger servers to check your messages.
There are lots of VPN apps available. Names showing up on “best of” lists for 2015 and 2016 include TotalVPN, Tunnel Bear, and Spotflux. Most offer or require a paid subscription, while some have a free version with limitations that will probably not come into play for checking Kik Messenger real quick while at school.
You will have to install and set up your VPN on a network that does not block your device from the totality of the World Wide Web, most like your home Wi-Fi. Finding and installing an IPN is similar on both an iOS and Android device, going to your respective app store for the download. The instructions here outline the process for an Android smartphone or tablet:
- Go to Google Play and search for CyberGhost.
- At the first account setup screen, choose Continue.
- At the next account setup screen, choose Skip.
- On the access screen, choose Accept.
- When installation is complete, choose Open.
The CyberGhost interface will lead you through the steps to activate your VPN. On the free version, the options are pretty basic so just go with it.
When you click the orange button to activate CyberGhost VPN, a key will appear in the notification bar at the top of your screen to let you know it is working.
To turn off CyberGhost, click the button again; you will notice that the key icon in the notification bar disappears.
Get Your Kiks Wherever You Are
Schools put up Wi-Fi firewalls for good reason. Yet, to every rule, there might be a fair and honest exception. You may want to log in to Kik Messenger before or after the day’s session, during a lunch break, or when at your sister’s volleyball game (during half-time, of course). Just don’t get yourself in trouble – know your school’s rules and talk it over with your parents. What matters is, now that you know how to login to Kik at school, you can get your kiks wherever you are.
