The more you use Kik Messenger as your primary texting app, the more you will learn about the boatload of social features available to its users. Maybe you’ve come across the hashtag, #kikparty on Twitter or Facebook. You might have come across an invitation to a Kik Party with the terms “No Lames” or “Drop Kiks” while on Instagram and want to know, “What Is a Kik Party?”
The Kik Party
A Kik Party is when friends get together on Kik Messenger, the chat app that is booming in popularity. It is a get-together where folks join a topical discussion, play games, meet and greet, or just share in a lively chat. You may first hear of a Kik Party when a friend kiks you on Kik Messenger with an invitation. You can also find invitations posted on various social media, like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc.
If you want to join or start a Kik Party but are not yet using Kik Messenger, you can find the app in your mobile device’s app source, such as Google Play, The App Store, or Windows Store. Kik Messenger is totally free to download and use.
Find a Kik Party
You can find a Kik Party by searching the Web or social media for “Kik Party” or “#kikparty.” This is an example of #kikparty results on Twitter:
Kik Invitations
Whatever venue a Kik Party host chooses to post an invitation outside of Kik Messenger, they often use a graphic or meme to share the details. These details sometimes include a host’s username, a party hashtag (#suesunshines416party #kikparty), or a Kik Code.
Kik Party Lingo
When you see an invitation to a Kik Party, you will see words like “no lames,” “stay lit,” and “drop kiks.”
The terms “no lames” and “stay lit” are letting you know that the host wants to keep the party going. If you plan to just log in and watch what others are saying, you should find another place to be. The host(s) of this party expects all guests to add to the chat, participate in the discussion, or have a part in the game(s). Some hosts put it right in the invitation that they will boot guests who become “lames.”
“Drop kiks” tells you that the host is not posting her Kik name or posting a Kik Code but will add guests’ usernames to the party one-by-one. Just share your Kik name and wait for the invitation to come to you.
Joining a Kik Party
When you receive an invitation to a Kik Party over Kik Messenger, you just click it to join the fun. Other ways to join a Kik Party are to scan a Kik Party Code or to drop/comment your name/kik into a social media invitation.

We see our customers as invited guests to a party, and we are the hosts. It’s our job every day to make every important aspect of the customer experience a little bit better.- Jess Bezos
When you decide to host a Kik Party, you may want to plan it in some ways as you would any other party. You don’t have to plan a menu or deck the halls, but you might want to make up your mind on a thing or two before the party starts.
When will it be?
Do you want to have it right now? Later tonight? Next week? Maybe during the next episode of The Walking Dead? You’ll want to tell people when the party starts in your invitation (and don’t forget to use your Smiling Dead emoji).
How long will your Kik Party last?
You can let your Kik Party go its own way, ending it when everyone seems to be winding down, or you can set a time when you will thank guests for joining the party, wish them well, and close the group.
One important note: When the host leaves a Kik Party, the group chat closes and it is over. If you have more than one host, the party will keep going until all hosts leave.
Will you host alone or with a co-host?
You can co-host a Kik Party with a friend by promoting him to admin status.
- Enter your Kik Party.
- Click the Information icon in the upper right corner of your screen.
- Select your co-host.
- Select Promote to Admin from the menu.
Your co-host will now have a crown next to his name, just like yours.
What will you call your Kik Party?
When you start a group, Kik Messenger asks you to name it. Sure, you can leave this field blank, but what fun is that? Call it something as simple as, “My Party,” replacing “My” with your Kik name.
Another idea is to name it for the Kik Party game or theme. If you’re going to start a chain game at your party, call it “Song Chain Game.” A rating party could be called, “My Rate or Fate Party,” again putting your name in place of “My.”
You can name your Kik Party whatever you want to call it. If things go a different direction than expected, you can change the name of it whenever you want by going back to the information panel (click the icon in the top right corner of your screen).
Whom will you invite?
You have a lot of options here. Keep in mind that a Kik Party can have up to 50 people, including the host.
Usually, the first group of invitations goes to people in your Kik Messenger contact list. Beyond that, how public you want to go with your invitation is up to you.
When posting an invite on your Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook account, you can manage the level of privacy for your Kik Party by choosing to invite a custom group of friends, all friends, friends of friends, or you can go entirely public with it.
If you want to go public but retain some control over who is invited, you can ask people to comment their names so that you add each one to your Kik Party group. If you want to make new Kik friends, you can let anyone and everyone come to your Kik Party by sharing its Kik Code. Adding #kikparty to social media invitation will also help more people find your party.
Do you want to share a Kik Code?
When you decide to make your Kik Party open to all comers, you may want to share its Kik Code. It’s really easy to do this.
- Enter your Kik Party chat
- Click the icon in the top right corner of your screen,
- Select Show Kik Code,
- Then choose the share icon in the top right corner.
At this point, you can share directly in your preferred social media or you can send it to yourself to use as an image file in your customized invitation or graphic.
Will you use a meme graphic as an invitation?
Using a graphic in your Kik Party invitation is entirely optional. You will likely have a successful and lively party without it. It is worth considering, however, and especially so if you hope to attract new friends.
You can make a graphic or meme for your Kik Party that reflects your theme, your personality, or both. You can make it yourself from scratch or use a graphics generator like KeepCalm-o-Matic online or by using an app like the Keep Calm Generator.
Your graphic can be a means of attracting people to your Kik Party invitation or it can become the invitation when you include a custom hashtag or Kik Code.
Do you have special instructions for your Kik Party?
Do you want to state terms, like “No Lames” or “Stay Lit” in your invitation? Do you want people to “Drop Kiks” so that you can add them without posting the Kik Code? It is totally up to you.
If you decide to put something like “No Lames” or “Stay Active” in your invitation, it is up to you how strict you want to be about it. Since a Kik Party is full at 50 partiers and turns people away after that, you don’t want to let things die down too soon because you let too many “lames” hang in while there may be plenty of “lit” kiksters wanting to join.
When you want to enforce the “No Lames” rule, you can bounce someone from your chat:
- From your Kik Party screen, click the Information icon in the top right corner.
- At the bottom of that panel, click on the member you want to remove from the Kik Party.
- Here, you can choose to Remove from Group or Ban from Group.
How harsh you want to be is up to you. The first time, you might Remove from Group. If the member enters again and remains a “lame,” you can go through these steps again, this time choosing Ban from Group.
Will there be a topic of discussion or theme?
This is another optional choice, but a lot of people like to have a theme. Maybe a television show or favorite music group or genre. It may be a meet-and-greet for totally new people or a reunion of former classmates.
What game(s) will you play?
Games can be a major player in your Kik Party success.
You might start a song or movie chain, or keep it simple with a word chain. The point of a chain game is to change a part of the last post so that your post is entirely different from any others in the chain. In song or movie chains, one word is kept from the previous entry. For example:
- BACK IN THE USSR
- BACK ON THE CHAIN GANG
- THE CHAIN
- UNCHAINED MELODY
- MELODY OF LOVE
And, of course, there are oodles and oodles of songs with the word “love” in the title, so you see how this game can go on for as long as you want it to go, either until someone is stumped or there is a repeat.
A word chain moves faster and is also a lot of fun. In this game, you start with a four-letter word. Each subsequent player changes only 1 letter in the word to make a new four-letter word. For example:Hope
- Hype
- Type
- Peat
- Meat
- Meet
- Team
